6th Annual Arbitration & Investment Summit 2018 (Caribbean, Latin America & Other Emerging Markets)

In Nassau, Bahamas for the 6th Annual Arbitration & Investment Summit 2018 (Caribbean, Latin America & Other Emerging Markets) where I participated in a pre-event round table discussion on, ‘Effective Ways to Create an Arbitration Center’, delivered welcoming remarks at the conference itself, before going on to speak at two sessions on, ‘Construction Disputes: Adjudication Leading the Way,’ and ‘Arbitration Centres – Cooperation Vs Competition: Building the Market.’ Had the opportunity to talk and share about KLRCA’s blueprint for success. Key takeaways include; (1) Development of a thriving arbitral institution is never a homogeneous process, (2) The regional needs and niche businesses should be identified, eg. “Belt & Road” initiative for KLRCA (3) To succeed an arbitral institution should effectively perform both roles that of a service provider and of a public institution, (4) Focus on capacity building and collaboration instead of taking a “One versus all” stance. The key ultimately lies in collaboration, and from the many fruitful discussions in Nassau, I believe the room for the development of arbitration in Latin America and Caribbean is limitless and a promising one. I look on with much hope. Thank you organisers for putting this conference together.
