24 Oct Opening address as Deputy Chairman of the Steering Committee at Focus Group Discussion

Delivered the opening address as Deputy Chairman of the Steering Committee at this morning’s Focus Group Discussion on the preparation of a holistic blue print for the legal profession in Malaysia. Today’s discussion was a culmination of many weeks of hard work from the special committee chaired by YB Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, set up to facilitate and create a process for an open and inclusive workshop to hear, discuss and deliberate on key issues relating to legal education and practice in Malaysia.   The relevance of this group made up of members of the Malaysian Bar, the nation’s brightest academics and leading governmental and NGO agencies is key and relevant not just to the legal profession but to the future and growth of the profession in Malaysia. The fruits of today’s discussion having been collated and submitted to the Steering Committee, will eventually move on to a public consultation process using a dedicated website, with a comprehensive report being produced at the end of it to ensure all representations made both verbally and in written form are included with a proper forum being lined up to further discuss its findings for the greater good of the country’s legal landscape.
